In 1981, Tom Heaton set out to do a crazy thing. First on a bicycle and then on foot, he recreated the 3,500-mile journey of the 19th-century explorer, Count Teleki, across a previously unexplored East Africa. Unfit and ill-prepared, Heaton set off alone, following in the footsteps of the Count who had taken with him a small army of followers and equipment. This is the story of how he overcame mishaps, dangers and disasters. Along the way he encountered wild animals, mischievous bandits and many other discomforts, but he also discovered companionship, hospitality and even love.
