Philosophical Documents in Education Summary

Philosophical Documents in Education by Tony W. Johnson

The introduction to the fourth edition of Philosophical Documents in Education asks the simple question, what does it mean to be educated? That simple but profound inquiry is answered throughout the anthology's 16 chapters by both classical and contemporary educators, progressives, and philosophers. Driven by the idea that students can better understand and practice their profession by reading, contemplating, and discussing philosophical and historical literature, this collection of primary sources exposes readers to a wealth of ideas regarding teaching, learning, schooling, and instruction - from ancient texts to modern selections.

About Tony W. Johnson

A former coach and high school history teacher, Tony W. Johnson earned his Ph.D. in the history and philosophy of education from George Peabody College for Teachers, now part of Vanderbilt University. Receiving the Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award as Peabody's outstanding graduate, Dr. Johnson earned a "pass with distinction" evaluation of his dissertation, The Old Moral Philosophy Course: Its Continuing Legacy in 1978. As a faculty member and academic administrator, Dr. Johnson has provided innovative and entrepreneurial leadership to four significantly different institutions: The University of Texas at San Antonio; The University of North Carolina at Greensboro; West Chester University of Pennsylvania; and The Citadel: The Military College of South Carolina.

A skilled teacher and experienced academic leader, Dr. Johnson is also an accomplished scholar. In additions to multiple editions of the Philosophical Documents in Education text, Professor Johnson is the author of Philosophy for Children: An Approach to Critical Thinking; Discipleship or Pilgrimage: The Educator's Quest for Philosophy; Historical Documents in Education; and with Ron Reed, Friendship and Moral Education: Twin Pillars of Philosophy for Children. As a professor, scholar, and academic leader, Dr. Johnson is committed to blending liberal and professional studies into a unified and integrated whole.
