Patient's Charter Summary

Patient's Charter by Verena Tschudin

This text is part of a series exploring ethical issues relevant to the practising nurse. The series is designed to help the Project 2000 student in particular, to gain a deeper undertstanding of the issues and to apply their understanding to their practice. In terms of ethics, The Patient's Charter is specifically about the rights of patients and clients. This book views the ethical issues of the charter from four different viewpoints - the nurse, the doctor, the manager and the patient. The nurse's view examines charter standard 8. The concept of the named nurse is discussed and the unwritten implications of the charter are explored. The doctor's view takes a more practical approach and discusses how these rights and standards affect GPs and patients. The manager's view discusses the new responsibilities and the pressures to fill them. The patient's view is in two parts, the first, written by officers of the Association of Community Health Care Councils for England and Wales (ACHCEW), discusses the surveys and findings of their Association. The second gives extracts from patient interviews.
