The Skills of Management by W. David Rees
This is the 3rd edition of an introduction to management. Starting with the transition to a managerial role, it identifies and explains the basic skills and responsibilities required: delegation, motivation, selection, appraisal, counselling, disciplinary handling, industrial relations and the skills involved in handling meetings. Throughout, the need to identify objectives, to establish priorities and to manage time effectively is stressed. The differences in styles needed between various organizations or in different countries is also examined. This edition has been expanded to take account of recent developments in management theory. It gives new attention to concerns such as performance-related pay, increased localization and new technology, stressing the modern need for prioritization and greater cost-effectiveness in the face of cuts in resources.
