Dieppe Summary

Dieppe: Tragedy to Triumph by W.Denis Whitaker

One morning in August 1942, Canadian troops undertook the largest and most complex amphibious assault of World War II. It was a display of camaraderie and courage that paved the way for future triumphs, but nevertheless the landings at Dieppe were a tragic disaster. In Winona, Ontario, two weeks after the raid, the residents read the casualty lists. Awakening, like the rest of Canada, to the extent of the disaster, they realized that every single young man of fighting age of the town's population had been killed or taken prisoner in one morning. This account chronicles the political and military events leading to the assault, and the action itself. The book includes personal reports, memories and profiles of key participants, and is based on recently-released archive material that offers evidence of high-level involvement in the planning and tragedy of Dieppe. Exploring the political manouevres that set the wheels in motion, the book builds to the bloody events, which are related by several of the commanders, both Allied and German.
