About Wendy M. Nehring

Wendy M. Nehring, RN, PhD, FAAN, FAAIDD is Dean and Professor of the College of Nursing at East Tennessee State University as of Feburary, 2008. Previously, she held administrative and faculty positions at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a faculty position at Illinois Wesleyan University. Dr. Nehring received her PhD in Nursing Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago, her MS in Pediatric Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her BSN from Illinois Wesleyan University. Dr. Nehring is nationally and internationally known in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities and in the field of high-fidelity nursing simulation. Along with Felissa Lashley, she is the author of Critical Incident Nursing Management, a conceptual framework for nursing practice using high-fidelity patient simulation. Dr. Nehring is also part of the Rutgers team of faculty who participated as a pilot school in the development of METI's Program for Nursing Curriculum Integration (PNCI). In addition, Dr. Nehring wrote the only nursing history book on nursing in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities. She and her colleagues have revised the Scope and Standards of Practice in this specialty in 2004 and this publication was published by American Nurses Publishing and the American Association on Mental Retardation. Dr. Nehring is also the editor of a core curriculum for nurses and health professionals specializing in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities (2005), an evidence-based practice book on specific health promotion topics and the research that was conducted on these topics with persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (2005), and a book on the health concerns of adolescents with special health care needs and disabilities transitioning into adulthood (2007). She has written, presented, and consulted widely on this nursing specialty. Dr. Nehring's funding has been in both of these areas. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Lashley has authored more than 300 publications, and has presented nationally and internationally on a variety of topics, including simulation. The first and second editions of her book, Clinical Genetics in Nursing Practice, received Book of the Year Awards from the American Journal of Nursing. Three of her other books have won AJN Book of the Year awards: The Person with AIDS: Nursing Perspectives (Durham and Cohen, Eds), Women, Children and HIV/AIDS (Cohen and Durham), and Emerging Infectious Diseases: Trends and Issues (Lashley and Durham) (which was also a Choice awardee) while Tuberculosis: A Sourcebook for Nursing Practice (Cohen and Durham) won a Book of the Year Award from the Nurse Practitioner journal. She created a webpage for nurses to share biopreparedness and emerging infectious diseases information, and initiated an annual interdisciplinary conference on emerging infectious diseases. Dr. Lashley has over 350 presentations, most recently on emerging infectious diseases and avian influenza and simulation. She has been interviewed on avian influenza for television, radio, newspapers, and most recently, Oprah Winfrey=s magazine, the AO@ (June, 2006). Dr. Lashley has received several million dollars in external research funding. She has been an invited member of a number of research advisory groups at National Institutes of Health. She was a member of the NIH consensus panel on Phenylketonuria: Screening and Management. Dr. Lashley received the 2000 Research Recognition Award for Outstanding Research from the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care. In March, 2003 she received the distinguished alumni award from Illinois State University, and in 2005 was initiated into their Hall of Fame. In 1999, she received the Distinguished Nurse Research Award from the Illinois Nurses Association. She also received the SAGE award for mentoring nurse leaders in 2001 from the Illinois Leadership Institute. She was an associate editor of the journal, IMAGE: The Journal of Nursing Scholarship. She is a member of the editorial boards of AIDS Education and Prevention, and Nursing and Health Sciences. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, and of the statewide NJ MEDPREP committee. She has been selected as a Awoman of excellence@ by the New Jersey Women In AIDS Network.
