Summary

Surviving Medicine: the med school years is an irreverent and tongue-in-cheek take on life as you begin your medical education.

It's packed full of cartoons and anecdotes, but also offers advice on surviving ward rounds, coping with doubt and anxiety, preparing for exams, and lots more besides.

Surviving Medicine: The Med School Years Summary

Surviving Medicine: The Med School Years by Will Sloper

Tips, techniques, humour and cartoons to guide you through life as a medical student.

Being a medical student is challenging, intimidating and rewarding in equal measure. Medical students often get hung up on the stresses and strains of learning such a vast amount of information and the expectations upon them.

Surviving Medicine: the med school years is the perfect antidote to this stressful environment - the cartoons are light-hearted reflections on life as a medical student and highlight some of the absurdities you are likely to encounter.

But this book is much more than just a collection of funny, and often irreverent, cartoons. It provides real practical advice on surviving ward rounds, coping with doubt and anxiety and preparing for exams, amongst others.

It also contains a weath of medical tips and knowledge to help you survive your time at medical school.

Most of the situations described in this book will crop up at some point as you progress through medical school and beyond. Consider them a rite of passage as you rack up the experience and confidence to look back and think, I can't believe I was scared of that...!

Surviving Medicine: The Med School Years Reviews

Five-star reviews:

Really enjoyable book for students and doctors alike I got this book after enjoying Dr Sloper's instagram account (@unicyclemedic). Unsurprisingly, the cartoons are really funny and there are lots of new ones in addition to those he has previously published. The accompanying explanatory text and advice are really useful for any medical student especially because Dr Sloper has a realist approach to things - he recognises and pokes fun at the fact that medical students have no idea what we're doing..! What makes the book really great is that, in combination with this, the accompanying text contains lots of heartfelt, personal advice (especially Chapter 6) about how to deal with uncertainty and difficult clinical situations to go perfectly with the humour. I really recommend and will be flicking through it during finals revision for a laugh for sure.
Also, it's not just for students - I showed it to my partner's doctor parents and they loved it, I imagine it would also be a good and humorous way for medical students to explain to friends and family just what it is we've been doing for the past 4-6 years. I've attached a photo example of just one of the many great jokes/observations in this book. Amazon reviewer
