A practical presentation of the essence of rational-emotive counselling for anyone who is starting training in counselling, and for counsellors who are already in practice but want to familiarize themselves with the principles of a different approach. Originated by Albert Ellis in the 1950s, this approach focuses on the interaction between people's thoughts, emotions and actions. It offers a system for helping clients understand the self-defeating beliefs which underlie their problems and learn to think, feel and act differently as the basis for achieving valued goals and purposes. A case-study is used throughout the book to illustrate the rational-emotive approach and techniques, following both client and counsellor from the first meeting and problem assessment through the contract and homework assignments, then helping the client maintain and enhance his or her gains, to the termination of counselling.
