Nursing Research Résumé

Nursing Research: An Ethical and Legal Appraisal Louise de Raeve

Research with patients raises particular ethical issues because of their vunerability in illness, their dependency on others, and the distribution of power within the health care arena. Thus a wide range of dilemmas and difficult questions can arise, as can potential conflict between the researcher and carer. Using absorbing case scenarios, this innovative book skilfully explores, analyses and synthesises material from a variety of clinical research perspectives. Section One opens with a series of clinical case studies which have been chosen carefully to represent the four main research methodologies: action research, case study, survey, and experimental research. The case studies have been selected from groups who are considered to be particularly vulnerable - for example children, the mentally ill, and those with cancer. Section Two contains three chapters which offer ethical, legal and philosophical perspectives. Finally, Section Three focuses on two highly pertinent topics: ethical review, and the teaching of nursing research. The World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki of 1964, amended in 1989, appears as an Appendix to the book. Features: * First book of its kind to explore nursing - rather than medical-research ethics. * Links two key subject areas: nursing and ethics. * Expert authors. * Appendix on the Helsinki declaration of the World Medical Association.
