When you hold the high ground on the battlefield you should win but the German Tenth Army was heavily out-numbered and, in truth, did well to hold out for four long months of vigorous fighting with the British and American forces before the Allied force eventually secured the mountain and were able to link up with the Anzio beach-head and move onto Rome. The Allies suffered twice the number of casualties but were in a position to bring forward new troops and weaponry that finally broke the German resolve.
