Archaeological deposits, some nine metres thick, have brought to light an astonishing array of remains which revolutionize understanding of earlier life in the city. The author, an archaeologist with the York Archaeological Trust, and a York resident since 1974, discusses the architectural features of the city and their importance to the community.
