Between 1880 and the early 1950s, about 75% of the British population were manual wage-earners or their dependents. Thus in order to understand the way modern Britain has evolved, it is essential to appreciate working-class culture and organization. This collection of essays examines such topics as gambling, hobbies, poverty, the effects of World Wars I and II and the failure of Marxism to give an integrated explanation of British society and class ideology.
