Following demolition and redevelopment, and during the 1960s and 1970s, much of Barnsley changed and some parts are now almost beyond recognition. Still proud of its industrial heritage of wire, linen, glass and coal, the most important aspect of Barnsley remains the character of its people and, not surprisingly, many have risen to become leading figures in sport, the arts, science and business in recent years.
