Aimed at pupils of a standard between Grades 4 and 6, this excellent selection also offers great value for money - many of the pieces included can cost only slightly less than this book when purchased individually. The most familiar pieces on offer (Elgar's Chanson de Matin, von Paradis's beautiful Sicilienne, Bizet' s Habanera from Carmen and Bach's Air on a G String) are satisfying to play and make great concert pieces, while the less familiar work (e.g. Edward German's Torch Dance and Peter Sculthorpe's Serenade) present different challenges but are equally rewarding. Bowing and fingering markings are kept to a minimum but work well. All in all, for a pupil who doesn't already own too many of the pieces in the collection this comes very highly recommended.
Music Teacher Magazine, February 2008
An excellent collection of 12 pieces selected by Mary Cohen. They cover a wide range of styles, including Baroque (Vivaldi and Bach), Romantic (Brahms and Grieg) and modern (Peter Sculthorpe).
The selection also provides a good range of musical and technical challenges to the 'intermediate'pupil. Second and fifth positions are required in several pieces and Edward German's Torch Dance has some fun chromatic challenges. This is a reasonably priced collection with an enjoyable selection of pieces.
