A Guide to Sisters Summary

A Guide to Sisters by Paula Metcalf

If youre a big sister, you probably know lots of things already. But when it comes to dealing with little sisters, every girl could use a few extra tips! This guide covers important topics like cuteness (thank goodness shes the cute one nowwhat a hassle that was!), tickling (includes handy cutout that details ticklish spots), and sharing (one cupcake for her, two for you).

This creative, witty book provides a warm, caring, funny and very tongue-in-cheek glimpse into the world of sisters, big or little. The just-enough illustrations capture the essence of little girls; their confidence and their vulnerability.

A Guide to Sisters Reviews

Told from the viewpoint of a big sister this cute and
funny book explores the pros and cons of having a sister and some of the things you
(and she) might get up to...

Quite frankly, I expected A Guide to Sisters to be a bit cute and
a bit ordinary, the way so many picturebooks for little girls are. Cute is fine, but
sometimes you want more. And you know what? Paula Metcalf has written a very
amusing and unusual book, which is nicely - but not too cutely - illustrated by
Suzanne Barton.

The interaction between the twosome is delightful, funny and full of warm friendship. A perfect book to share with small girls.

Sisters - sometimes you wish they weren't there but really, they are lovely to have and this witty book is a celebration of that This is another picture book in the words and pictures series from Quarto - each one is an excellent story great for reading aloud, complemented by wonderful illustrations.

"Barton s illustrations share something of Maurice Sendak s breezy wit, a perky charm that accompanies Marcalf s amusing text to perfection i was tickled by the whole book as all sisters will be."

The illustrations are bright and colourful, capturing
specific moments that many with sisters go through... I was giggling through every
page, almost in tears because it was so funny and happy tears at the end because it
is a touching read. This is staying firmly on my bookshelf for whenever I need a pick
me up. I'd love to see more like this.

A laugh out loud treat is in store for you when you open up
this treasure trove of delights. Young children, parents and grandparents will all be
spellbound The text is marvellously witty, yet warm and loving, as it spells out the pros
and cons, the hazards and the enjoyment of growing up with a little sister.

About Paula Metcalf

PAULA METCALF is a successful author and illustrator; she decided on her career when she was 16, and graduated with a First Class Honours degree and an MA in children's illustration. She was the first Illustrator-in-Residence at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Buckinghamshire and is a visiting lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University, where she teaches Childrens Book Illustration. This book is very close to Paula's heart; she is the middle sister, so knows all too well about being the younger as well as the older one.

Newcomer SUZANNE BARTON is a recent graduate of the Cambridge School of Art. Married with two children, she's been developing this as-yet unseen style that proves less really is more.
